Description

Way of St. James, Arles Route / Camino Aragonés / Arles / Somport Pass / Puente la Reina

Designated GR®653 by the French Hiking Federation, the Arles Route is one of the major historical routes of the Way of St. James. Once used by pilgrims from Provence and Italy, it begins in the charming town of Arles, in southern France, and continues to Puente la Reina in Spain, where it joins the famous Camino Francés towards Santiago de Compostela.

The Miam Miam Dodo Arles Route is the essential guide for independent hiking on this pilgrimage route, also known as the Via Tolosana, as well as on the Camino Aragonés.

Stretching for nearly 800 kilometers, the Arles Way offers an exceptional diversity of landscapes and terrain: plains, forests, hills, valleys, and mountains unfold along its various stages. Heavily traveled during the Occitan civilization, this route crosses territories steeped in history, particularly that of the Cathars.

Due to significant differences in altitude, this path requires thorough preparation and a reasonable level of physical fitness to fully enjoy the adventure.

The added bonus: thanks to its particularly pleasant climate, the Via Tolosana stands out from other major French routes. It is, in fact, the only one that can be traveled in two directions: towards Santiago de Compostela on one side, and towards Rome on the other.
